 Speed is nothing but the rate of rotation or number of rotations or revolutions per unit time. There are different ways to express speed in different units such as meters, kilometers, hours, minutes, and seconds. All the students of Grade 5 can learn how to convert km per hour to meter per second from this article.

We suggest the students make our page as a reference to enhance their math skills and also to understand the concepts in depth which helps you to secure the highest marks in the exams. Practice the problems given in the below section to know the methods for expressing speed in different units.

What is Speed?

Speed is something that is moving fast. It is a measure of the object that moves from one place to another place. Speed is measured as distance traveled by time. Speed can be calculated by using the below formula.
Speed = Distance traveled/Unit of Time

Steps to Express Speed in Different Units

1. First set up the formula to calculate the speed.
2. Refer to the time and distance given to find the speed.
3. Put the given values in the speed formula.
4. Now divide the distance by the time traveled by the person or the object.
5. If needed convert the units from miles or kilometers per hour to miles or kilometer per minute or miles or kilometer per second.

Go through the following conversions to know how to express the speed in different units.
i. 1 kilometer = 1000 meter
ii. 1 meter = 1/1000 kilometer
iii. 1 minute = 1/60 hour
iv. 1 minute = 60 seconds
v. second = 1/60 minute
vi. 1 hour = 60 minutes

Expressing Speed in Different Units Examples

Let us learn the simple methods to express speed in different units with some examples. These questions and answers will help you out to score good marks in the exams and also in the real life.

Example 1.
The speed of the bus is 35 kilometers per hour. Calculate its speed in meters per second?
Solution:
We know that,
1 kilometer = 1000 meters
1 hour = 60 minutes
1 minute = 60 seconds
1 hour = 60 × 60 seconds
Speed of the bus = 35 kilometres/1 hour
= 35 × 1000 meters/60 × 60 seconds
= 35/2 m/sec

Example 2.
Convert 70 meters per minute into km per hour?
Solution:
We know that,
Speed = distance/ time
= 70 meters/1 minute
= 70/1000kilometers/1/60 hours
= 70/1000 × 60/1 kilometer per hour
= 420 km per hour

Example 3.
A car moves 30 meters/second and converts 20meter/sec into kilometers/hour?
Solution:
We know that,
1 kilometer = 1000 meter
1 meter = 1/1000 kilometre
30 meters = 30/1000 kilometres
1 hour = 60 × 60 = 3600 seconds
1 second = 1/3600 hours
But speed = distance ÷ time
= 30/1000 × 1/3600
= 30/1000 × 3600 kilometre/hour
= 108 kilometre/hour

Example 4.
Rahul travels 84 kilometers per hour and calculate its speed in meters per second?
Solution:
We know that,
1 kilometer = 1000 meters
1 hour = 60 minutes
1 minute = 60 seconds
1 hour = 60 × 60 seconds
Speed of the bus = 84 kilometres/1 hour
= 84 × 1000 meters/60 × 60 seconds
= 42 m/sec
Thus Rahul travels 42 meters/sec.

Example 5.
Convert 40 meters per minute into kilometers per hour?
Solution:
We know that,
Speed = distance/ time
Speed = 40 meters/1 minute
Speed = 40/1000kilometers/1/60 hours
Speed = 40/1000 × 60/1 kilometer per hour
Speed = 2.4 kilometres per hour

FAQs on Expressing Speed in Different Units

1. How do you express Meter per Sec?

Meter/Sec is the unit of speed that is expressed in terms of meters and seconds. It defines the number of meters traveled in a second.

2. What is the formula of Speed?

Speed = Distance traveled by person or object/Unit of Time
The common units of speed are meter per second, Kilometer per hour, and miles per hour.

3. How do you convert seconds to meters per second?

To convert minutes traveled into seconds traveled by multiplying the number of minutes traveled by 60. Divide the distance by the time.
